Your website should act like a filter. It should attract the right clients and gently repel the ones who aren’t aligned. But when your messaging, visuals, and structure aren’t working together, the wrong people keep slipping through.

The good news is that a few strategic shifts can completely change the kind of inquiries you receive. Here are three website shifts that can help you start attracting more aligned clients.

1. Shift From “What You Do” to “Who You’re For”

One of the most common mistakes I see on creative websites is messaging that tries to appeal to everyone.

You’ll see things like:

Wedding photographer capturing timeless memories
Helping couples document their love story
Beautiful imagery for every stage of life

While those statements sound nice, they’re also incredibly broad. And when messaging is broad, it attracts a broad audience.

Aligned clients want to feel like your brand was created specifically for them.

Instead of focusing only on what you do, focus on who you serve and the experience you provide.

For example, instead of saying:

“I photograph weddings and engagements.”

You might say:

“I photograph intentional, design-forward weddings for Spokane, WA couples who value artful storytelling.”

The difference is subtle but powerful. It tells the right clients that they’ve found someone who understands their vision. Your website should make your ideal client feel like they’re in the right place within seconds.

Add Strategic Filtering Copy

Your website should quietly filter out the wrong clients with ultra-clear messaging statements. 

For example:

• “I work best with couples who value intentional design.”
• “My approach is best suited for full wedding weekend celebrations.”
• “I take on a limited number of weddings each year.”

This doesn’t repel ideal clients. It attracts them, because they feel like they’ve found someone who understands their vision.

2. Clarify Your Brand Positioning Above the Fold

This is what people see before they scroll when they get to your homepage. This is the most important part of your website and where 99% of your visitors will make a snap judgement if you’re for them, and it’s critical you get it right. You can 10x your inquiries with aligned clients with section strategically done right.

The Header

We want to clearly outline how you serve them here. For example, nobody buys a hammer just because they love hammers. They are looking to hang pictures or build something meaningful. Ask yourself, what is the end result people want when considering working with me? Is it achievement, power, or relationship? This is what we will outline in the header.

Here is a strategic plug n play you can implement on your own website:

• [Results you offer] so that [the result they want].
• I do ________ for X so they can _________.
• Instead of ________ you could be _________.

Example:

Photographing Temecula California weddings timelessly so that you can cherish your wedding day for generations.

Subeader

Here is where we will want to answer their next questions to qualify you as the one they’re searching for.

• Why is this important?

• How do you deliver it?
• What makes you capable?

Example:

Full coverage wedding photographer with 5+ years of experience so you can fully enjoy your day knowing all the important moments are artfully captured.

End With A Strong Clear to Action

Now we need to guide them by telling them what to do next. We always want to be guiding them through your site. A good rule of thumb is to include a CTA in almost every section, whether that’s to inquire or to view another piece of the site. Make sure you are using clear verbiage so they know exactly what will happen if they click on a button. Stay away from “clever” or unclear CTA’s

Good examples:

• Set Up a Call
• Inquire About Your Date
• Apply For a Consultation (this one exudes exclusivity!)

Bad Examples:

• Heck Yes!
• Let’s Do This
• Click Here

3. Design Your Website to Guide the Client Journey

A beautiful website is important, but strategy matters just as much as aesthetics.

Your website should guide potential clients through a clear journey:

• Understanding who you are
• Seeing the kind of work you create
• Imagining what it would feel like to work with you
• Taking the next step to inquire

If your pages feel disconnected or overwhelming, visitors may leave before they ever reach your inquiry form. A strategic website experience uses thoughtful layout, clear sections, and intentional messaging to move people through your brand story.

Instead of simply displaying information, your website should build trust and connection with each scroll.

Each page should have a clear goal in mind:

• Homepage → a menu for the rest of the site (each main internal page should have a section on your homepage to guide them through your site)
• Services page → Give them an overview of the experience you provide & a general idea of your pricing level.
• Portfolio → Give them 3-6 wedding galleries that detail the couples day, vendors, and the work you did for them (bonus: add a testimonials here!)

The result is that by the time someone reaches your contact page, they already feel confident that you’re the right fit.
